While Adam Lambert certainly seems to have a strong sense of who he is and who he wants to be (as evidenced by his controversial performance on the American Music Awards last week), the "American Idol" runner-up admits that when he first sat down to start work on his debut album, For Your Entertainment, he wasn't sure what he should sound like.
"For a second there, I was like, 'Wait a minute?' " he told MTV News. "Right after 'Idol' [I didn't know what to do] because that's when we started planning the album. And I was just like 'I don't really know what direction I need to go in. I don't know if I should be doing straight-up rock music because I got a lot of my cred on 'Idol' doing '70s rock, or if I should be doing the electro-pop dance stuff that I love, that I listen to now," he explained. I couldn't decide: Do I do what I love to listen to or what I'm best at or what am I best at?"
So he opted for a combination of all the styles he loves. "It was a moment of kind of tossing it around and then I thought to myself, 'Why not throw it all together in a big melting pot and come up with my own thing, so that's what we did," he explained.
He was also quick to say that his team was on board every step of the way.
"It came to me and I was like, 'Alright, that's what we should do," he explained about the album's sound. "And I was also heavily assisted by my management and RCA, I bounced ideas off of them. It was a team effort, for sure."
