[Smells Like News] Celebs in Poker Charity Events
Poker charity events are becoming increasingly popular, and nowadays they attract lots of main stream celebrities. Two big charity tournaments have been held recently; in luxurious settings, for good causes.
Last weekend, Jennifer Harman hosted an event at the Venetian in Vegas. All proceeds went directly to the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) with over $130,000 raised for animal cruelty prevention. Over 120 players turned out, including Simpsons voice-actor Nancy Cartwright and Dancing with the Stars contestant Karina Smirnoff. Of course, some of the best poker players in the world, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey, were there as well.
Another charity poker tournament, “Ante up for Africa”, was recently held in Monte Carlo - home of the ongoing European Poker Tour - EPT - Grand Finale. 40 players donated the €4,000 entry fee and PokerStars added €100,000, raising more than 250,000 euros in total for relief efforts in war-torn Darfur, Sudan. PokerStars is one of the largets poker rooms online.
Rapper Nelly, Heroes TV star James Kyson Lee, Liverpool goalie Pepe Reina, ex-soccer star Teddy Sheringham and Sex and the City’s Jason Lewis were among the participants in the tournament. Sheringham made it all the way to the final table, but lost heads-up to the classy and elegant PokerStars pro Isabelle Mercier.
