[Smells Like News] David Letterman Extortion Plot Report

David Letterman announced on Thursday that his on-air comments would be all he was going to speak about in regards to the $2 million extortion plot against him, but the topic filled his CBS Late Show on Monday.

The New York Post is giving further details of what happened from the diary of the former Late Show staff member Stephanie Birkitt, who was identified as the head of the scandal.

The newspaper says that Birkitt was his former assistant and she wrote that she had an affair with him even after moving in with Robert “Joe” Halderman. The producer is now being charged with attempted blackmail on Letterman.

Last fall, the Post says that the 62-year-old and the 35-year-old assistant hiked together on his Montana ranch, where he and Regina Lasko were married this past March. A source also added that Halderman stayed home in Connecticut while the two spent time together and Birkitt told him that she was simply Letterman’s “best friend” and shared a “platonic relationship.”

Other details emerging were of Letterman driving Birkitt to Norwalk, Conn., where she shared a home with Halderman and that, after she graduated Law School, Letterman offered her a job as his personal lawyer.

Sources also said that Halderman got ahold of the diary in December and grew angry when finding out the relationship between the two. On Monday, his lawyer, Gerald Shargel, said that Halderman’s side has not been heard and that the Late Show is manipulating the media. “David Letterman gave what he wanted the public to know.”
