[Smells Like News] Adam Lambert Talks Identity Crisis
Ever since he blasted onto the popular culture scene thanks to “American Idol,” Adam Lambert has been a household name. But when it came time to record his debut album, he says he experienced an identity crisis.
The “For Your Entertainment” singer, who dropped jaws with his risqué performance on the American Music Awards, says he had a hard time defining his sound right off the bat.
He explained, “For a second there, I was like, ‘Wait a minute?’ Right after ‘Idol’ [I didn’t know what to do] because that’s when we started planning the album. And I was just like I don’t really know what direction I need to go in. I don’t know if I should be doing straight-up rock music because I got a lot of my cred on ‘Idol’ doing ‘70s rock, or if I should be doing the electro-pop dance stuff that I love, that I listen to now. I couldn’t decide: Do I do what I love to listen to or what I’m best at or what am I best at?”
Lambert continued, “It was a moment of kind of tossing it around and then I thought to myself, ‘Why not throw it all together in a big melting pot and come up with my own thing?’ So that’s what we did. It came to me and I was like, ‘Alright, that’s what we should do.’ And I was also heavily assisted by my management and RCA, I bounced ideas off of them. It was a team effort, for sure.”
