Add Neil Patrick Harris to the increasingly star-studded list of people lending a hand on the upcoming season of "American Idol." The "How I Met Your Mother" actor warmed the Paula Abdul memorial spot on Tuesday in Dallas, according to "Access Hollywood." He joins an elite group of guest judges that already includes Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Shania Twain, Katy Perry and Joe Jonas.
While a spokesperson for "Idol" did not return calls for comment, "Access Hollywood" reported that Harris sat alongside judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi on day two of the auditions in Dallas on Tuesday. (Jonas had the honors on Monday.)
Unlike the other guest judges, Harris has never released an album of his own, but his has appeared on Broadway in "Sweeney Todd" and "Cabaret" and he showed off his considerable pipes in the Web series "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog."
Following longtime judge Paula Abdul's surprise departure from the show earlier this month, "Idol" has brought in a series of guest judges to fill the fourth seat on the panel. Producers have not announced if they intend to fill the seat permanently for the upcoming season or return to the three-judge format employed before songwriter/singer DioGuardi joined the cast last season.
Despite speculation that Abdul might be angling for a return to the show closer to the beginning of the season in January, the singer/choreographer's manager recently said that re-joining "Idol" is not in his client's plans. It was announced on Tuesday that Abdul will host next month's "VH1 Divas" concert.
