[Smells Like News] Tyler Perryâs Abusive Childhood
He’s usually busy cracking people up as his “Madea” character, but this time around, Tyler Perry is getting real about the horrific abuse he experienced as a child.
The prolific actor/writer says that working as an executive producer on “Precious” brought back some pretty painful memories of his own rough upbringing.
On his website, Perry wrote, “I always thought I would die before I grew up. My father came home, mad at the world. He was drunk, as he was most of the time. He got the vacuum cleaner extension cord and trapped me in a room and beat me until the skin was coming off my back.”
Tyler also revealed that his grandmother once gave him a very dangerous bath. “She said she was going to kill these germs on me once and for all. She gave me a bath in ammonia.”
Seeing “Precious” helped Perry realize all that he’d overcome. “It hit me so hard, I sat there in tears realizing that somehow, by the grace of God, I made it through. My tears were tears of joy, being thankful that I made it.”
